Childbirth is a major event. That is why you want to know in advance what to expect. On our website you will not find how we work during childbirth as standard, because every childbirth is different. We will personally discuss with you what your wishes and needs are. This way you will receive the guidance that suits you.
At Amare we believe it is important that you decide about your delivery. We understand that every woman has her own wishes regarding delivery. You decide how and where you want to give birth. If your wishes differ from the protocol in the region, we will be happy to discuss this with you. We will not intervene as long as everything goes normally.
'At Amare it's all about you. You play the leading role during your delivery.'
There are a number of things you need to arrange to prepare for your delivery. Other things you can do, but don't have to. We have made a checklist for you.
It is important that you arrange maternity care on time: before the 13th week. You can check with various maternity care organizations to see if they work with your standards and values. Do you have any questions? Feel free to call!
A maternity package contains medical supplies that are needed during and after delivery. Even if you plan to give birth in the hospital, you should make sure that you have a maternity package at home. It is possible that you will give birth at home. Make sure that you have the maternity package at home before week 37.
You often hear the term 'hospital bag', but we prefer to call it 'birth bag'. You have the birth bag ready from week 37, because then your labor can already start. Do you want to give birth at home? Then you also pack a birth bag. You never know for sure whether you can stay home for the entire labor.
Blocks are a kind of legs that make your bed higher. Even if you want to give birth in the hospital, your bed must have blocks. This way, not only the midwife, but also the maternity nurse can work at a healthy working height. Your bed must be 80 centimeters high. You can buy or rent blocks, for example via Medipoint. Arrange this for week 37 as well.
You can make a birth plan, but you don't have to. A birth plan states your wishes and needs regarding the delivery. We would be happy to discuss this plan with you. Even without a birth plan, we will of course ensure that we are well informed about your wishes regarding the delivery.
You can take a pregnancy course, but you don't have to. There are all kinds of courses around pregnancy. Think of pregnancy yoga, hypnobirthing, a birthing workshop or a course for fathers. Google the different options to see if there is something that appeals to you. Of course we can also tell you more about this.
Check out our call instructions so you know when to call us if you think labor has started. As soon as the contractions are strong enough and regular, we will come to you.
Of course, you can also call us at any other time. We understand that pregnancy can bring many questions and sometimes uncertainties, which is why we are happy to help you. Even if you are worried, we would like you to call us. At Amare, we believe that calling once too often is better than not enough.
As soon as your labor has started properly, we will visit you. Depending on how much dilation you have and how quickly it is going, we will decide whether we will stay with you or come back later. If you want to give birth in the hospital, we will estimate the best time to leave together. Whatever kind of birth you want, we are ready for you.
'We are here for you and your child.'
At home or in hospital
As long as everything goes well and there are no special circumstances, you can choose whether you want to give birth in the hospital or at home. During the delivery, it is our job to assess any risks. Sometimes we have to transfer you to the hospital, for example if the baby has pooped in the amniotic fluid. But also if you want pain relief, we have to transfer you to the hospital.
Rhine State or Gelderse Valley
If we refer you to the hospital, this is usually the Rijnstate in Arnhem and sometimes the Gelderse Vallei in Ede.
Communication
We make agreements in advance about what care you expect from us during labor. But it is possible that your needs change during labor. That is why we find communication very important.
Our care does not stop once your baby is born. At Amare, we find the period after the birth at least as important as the period before. During your maternity week, we will visit you at home. We also have telephone contact. You can also always reach us if you have any questions.
After six weeks there is a follow-up check. Then we look at how you are doing physically, but also how you feel. For example, we look back on how you experienced your pregnancy and delivery and how you experience (new) motherhood.
